Winamp, the best media player around?

Posted by Flo in Freeware on March 12th, 2009.

At the moment, the most popular media players are definetely Windows Media Player and iTunes. Nevertheless, Winamp is also a pretty big player in this market and until a little while ago I was really sure that Winamp was the best media player around. But now VLC has made me think twice about that. However, I still have a few arguments why Winamp is the best mediaplayer, and not VLC…

Tag your music the right way with Kid3

Tagging music is quite useless for the average computer user since you would not even notice the difference. But if you want to distribute music, have a music collection or if you are a member of last.fm, you may need to have every song tagged correctly. When you use the windows XP system, this may take ages. You need to search for the correct tags on the internet and tag each file seperately. That is… until you download Kid3.

Rip videos and music from Youtube

Sometimes videos are just too interesting to let them stay on Youtube, you just need to have them. There are several ways to do this, but I think that using the free program “MediaCoder” is the best way. This is a quick guide explaining how to use this software to get videos from youtube. I will also explain how to use it to only rip the music from a Youtube video (so you don’t have to search for it on usenet, P2P or a torrent site). This trick also seems to work for MySpace, Google Video and some other video services.

Weekly Album #5: MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular

Posted by Flo in Music, Weekly Album on April 24th, 2008.

MGMT is most definitly one of the most promising bands at the moment. When I first heard their “Time to Pretend” I really found their music quite interesting, I’ve never heard something like that before. Their music is original, full of feeling and above all, incredibly stoned. Oracular Spectacular is their first album, and it really is a great debut.

The Wii doesn’t support video or music media, so if you want to view a downloaded movie or mp3, you must watch or listen it on your computer. Fortunately, there is a way to turn every console with connection to the internet into a media station. This works by streaming movies and music from you computer to your console, so you don’t even need to mod your console! Here’s a quick guide for the Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii.

Finding good open source DJ tools seems to be hard. I’ve tried a few applications that said to have a scratching function, but Tactile12000 is the first one that really has working turntables in it.

Weekly Album #3: System of a Down – Steal this album!

Posted by Flo in Music, Weekly Album on March 26th, 2008.
Tags: , ,

Steal this Album is a name that says everything about the album. It’s an anti-society themed album: asking people to do something illegal, namely stealing this album. It, on the other hand, can also be a message to their fans: don’t download our music, as a lot of tracks on this album were pre-released (not by SOAD) in slightly different versions on the internet as Toxicity 2.

Weekly Album #2: The Hives – The Black and White Album

Posted by Flo in Music, Weekly Album on March 7th, 2008.

The Swedish band “The Hives” is one of the leading punk/garage rock bands. This is one of the reasons why I just can’t ignore their newest album, The Black And White Album. It’s their first album in three years since Tyrannosaurus Hives, and the music on this cd surprised me: it’s not the Hives as I know them.
